Living/Dying

Inspired by Tarkovsky’s "Sacrifice". The film successfully captures a shred of the absolute: the truth of the unending process of living and dying. A central image of the film – a dead tree over the ocean – captures the idea: the flow of the unitary reality interrupted by the crystallized individual form which necessarily mediates experience of that unitary reality.

If a gift isn’t a sacrifice, it isn’t much of a gift. Just so with life: we can only experience it by our having undergone separation from the whole, relinquishing the comfort of absolute acceptance and union.

Background is a wave pattern I wrote a program to produce. Foreground is a photo of a tree I took in Warsaw, supported by a metal brace.

I wrote "Seeing Red" in cursive on an iPad, then extracted the bezier curve, and laid a sine wave normal to it to create the bottom curve. I then interpolated between that curve and a pure sine wave (times an exponential), at top, to create the progression from top to bottom.

In the background is random noise waves.

It represents the clarifying effect of ideas. From noise to a clear form.

Created for a yet unrealized conceptual piece involving a group of 13 unacquainted participants.

Modelled on the mathematical object of a projective plane over the field with 3 elements, the 13 people would participate in 13 meetings, with each person attending 4 meetings, each with 3 new people. Thus, each person would meet every other person in a small group.
